Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)

Since its foundation in 1966 as Korea’s very first institute for science and technology research, KIST has led Korea’s science and technology through development and commercialization of a wide variety of industrial technologies. As a research institute representing Korea, it cultivates the human resources for science and technology, and is at the forefront of international cooperation.

Location 39-1 Haweolgok-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul

When KIST students need data and reference for their research, they find their way to the library located on the fourth floor of the main building. Actually, its scale is smaller than the libraries of other universities or national libraries, but it still has a wealth of reference materials at least for the science fields. You can only use the library with an appointment. Most students find their materials these days using the Internet. However, the library allows you to validate your contents more accurately and in greater detail, and thus researchers also frequent the place.

“These are times when even scientists are expected to be well-versed in a variety of fields. When I hit a dead end of ideas, I often visit the library. From the science books on the left side of the library entrance I find sources for my research, and from the general books on the right, I find sources of wisdom on life.”  - Dae-hyeong.

In the link that connects the KIST main building and the research building is where Global Lounge is located. This is a venue meant as a resting hall for people to relax in, and is open to all for convenient use. Because of KIST’s expansive campus and the long travel times required to cross it, KIST residents spend most of their time in their labs. As such, the campus has prepared many locations throughout the campus where students can and rest, and Global Lounge is one of those spaces. People simply rest there or hold simple small group meetings. To sum up, it is the sarangbang (translator’s note: a guest room found in traditional Korean houses) of the KIST campus.

“I have gatherings with friends often at the Global Lounge. The space is wide, and it’s convenient to enjoy a tea time in comfort because there is a cafe right by it. It saves the trouble of finding a specific venue for meetings, and so I use it often.”  - Stephen.

Entering the KIST main entrance, one can find the KIST Hall of History to the left. Consisting of three segments, the place lets you take in KIST’s some forty years of history in a single view. One can also look around the history of Korea’s science. If you don’t have the leisure to visit in person, you can take advantage of its homepage which is designed to simulate a direct visit. Through the homepage (kist.intnaray.net/kist_web/
vtour/kistorium_1.html), you can also view every corner of the historical hall.

“Once you are at KIST, you should not miss the opportunity to retrace the history and journey of the place. The KIST Hall of History is just the place for that purpose. It is not an exaggeration to say that the development and achievements of KIST are the history of Korean science.”  - Dae-hyeong.

The entire KIST campus is vast, ing from Cheongryangri-dong, crossing over Sangweolgok-dong, and reaching all the way to Haweolgok-dong. Thanks to its great expanse, one can find wide lawns and several dullaegil, or circulatory paths, where you can enjoy a walk. Among them, the most popular route s in front of the main building. Walking along the path crossing low hills, you will find peace of mind even before you realize it. You don’t have to look anywhere else to find a place where you kill two birds with one stone take a relaxing walk and get some great, simple exercise. The route is also where you can look on the fantastic scenery of KIST’s changing seasons.

“I walk around the dullaegil for exercise. When you enter the woods, you can feel the thick fragrance of nature relaxing your body and mind. The wind between the trees is cool, and inhaling the fresh air gives you a tingling feeling in your lungs.”
- Dae-hyeong.

The gymnasium is one of the places most frequented by the students on campus. As long as you are a part of KIST, the gym is available whenever you want. With various exercise equipment, all kinds of exercises including strength exercises and aerobic exercises are possible. Greatest of all is the fact that the gym has glass walls on all sides and sits on a hill, which lets you work out while looking over the campus scenery. For KIST members, the gym is as good as a luxurious fitness center.

“The researcher’s lifestyle means you are sitting down most of the time except during lunch hours, so exercise is a must. I always visit the gym at the end of a day’s work to stretch out the stiffness that’s soaked into my joints throughout the day.”
- Stephen

Nearby KIST, Korea’s first institute for science technology, is another place that is described as a first. It is none other than the Hongreung Arboretum. It is Korea’s first modern arboretum, formed over 440,000m2 of land. Created in 1922, it is a rare spot in the heart of the city. Especially because it is a place focused on research as managed by Korea Forest Research Institute, it opens to the public only on weekends. Visiting the arboretum, one can encounter in a single location all the trees that grow scattered throughout Korea. Hence many of those that study plants trees in particular frequently visit the place. Above all, the path that runs down the edge of the arboretum is renowned for its beauty.

In a world full of fast food, the temptation of a pizza baked in good time in a fire oven can only be described as andante. At Oven and Beethoven, you can set aside your busy daily life and enjoy a relaxing moment. The menu items, each created specially with devotion, and the charming interior all catch your eyes. The recommended choice is of course pizza, and the fruit pizza is the most popular. The amazing thing about this place is that you find unexpectedly beautiful harmony in combinations of ingredients that you’ve never experienced anywhere else

There are times when you just long for the smell of coffee. Manolin is a cafe known by word-of-mouth among students of not only KIST but other nearby universities as well for brewing the best coffee. They roast their own coffee, and not surprisingly your feet will be automatically drawn by the aroma as you pass nearby. As you step inside, the shop has a classy interior decor. Its greatest attraction is its comfortable atmosphere. You feel relaxed without any awkwardness whether you are visiting with friends, more-than-friends or family; this is part of the appeal that sets Manolin apart from other coffee shops.
