Introduction to Polar Space Science

Summary

Lecture Objectives

  • The polar upper atmosphere is the atmospheric region of approximately 60 ~ 1,000 km altitude and as a part of the near-Earth’s space environment, various space weather phenomena as well as the aurora occur. Furthermore, it is known that the space environment including the polar upper atmosphere is closely related to the climate changes. This class introduces the near-Earth’s space environment such as the Sun, solar wind, and the magnetosphere in addition to the polar upper atmospheric phenomena including the aurora. In addition, this class introduces the astrobiology research.

Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions

Summary

Lecture Objectives

  • The ocean accounts for 70% of the global surface and acts as the most important source and sink of diverse climate-related compound. This lecture aims to understand the mechanism of ocean-atmosphere exchanges with particular focus on climate-related trace gases and particles. The lecture will cover 1) the ocean-atmosphere exchange of short-lived trace gases, 2) mechanisms of interfacial exchange, 3) ocean-atmosphere exchange of the greenhouse gases, 4) ocean-atmosphere exchange of particles, 5) current and future data collection and synthesis efforts.
