Course Name

Optical Design for Astronomical Instruments

Summary

Lecture Objectives

  • This course covers the optical design of astronomical instruments, which play a crucial role in the field of astronomy. Students will learn about major optical technologies used in astronomy and how they are applied. In addition, this course introduces software tools and techniques necessary for optical design, including the OpticsStudio (Zemax) program for practical optical design exercises. The objective of this course is to gain basic knowledge of geometric optics and practice simple ooptical design of astronomical instruments using the optical design program, leading to basic knowledge required for the design, analysis, and optical interpretation of instruments in the following semester. This course consists of two parts. The first six weeks cover the theory of geometric optics for non-optical majors using "Field guide to geometrical optics" (Ref.1). The remaining eight weeks will focus on practical optical design exercises using "Introduction to lens design: with practical ZEMAX examples" (Ref.2)
